The answer depends on what you screenshot. Instagram only sends notifications in one specific case — and it's not stories. Here's the complete, tested breakdown for 2026.
Instagram only notifies about screenshots of disappearing photos and videos sent in DMs. Screenshotting stories, posts, reels, profiles, or regular DM messages does not send any notification.
| What You Screenshot | Notification Sent? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Stories | ❌ No | Never notifies, even for close friends stories |
| Highlights | ❌ No | No notification |
| Feed posts | ❌ No | No notification |
| Reels | ❌ No | No notification |
| Profile page | ❌ No | No notification |
| Regular DM messages | ❌ No | Text, regular images, links — no notification |
| Disappearing photos/videos (DM) | ⚠️ Yes | A screenshot icon appears in the chat thread |
Instagram tested screenshot notifications for stories back in 2018 — they showed a ☀️ starburst icon on stories that had been screenshotted. This was rolled back quickly after user backlash and has not returned.
As of 2026, screenshotting Instagram stories does not notify the poster. This includes:
The account owner will never know you took a screenshot of their story.
Instagram has never sent screenshot notifications for feed posts or Reels. Screenshotting a post, a caption, a comment section, or a Reel does not trigger any notification to the poster. This has been consistent since the platform launched.
Regular Direct Messages — including text messages, voice messages, GIFs, regular photos you've sent, and links — do not trigger screenshot notifications. You can screenshot a DM conversation freely.
The one exception is disappearing content (see below).
Instagram notifies when you screenshot a disappearing photo or video sent in DMs. These are media files set to "View once" or "Allow replay" — they disappear from the chat after being viewed.
When you screenshot a disappearing photo/video:
⚠️ Instagram also detects screen recordings of disappearing content in some versions of the app, treating them the same as screenshots and sending the notification.
Since Instagram doesn't notify on story screenshots anyway, there's nothing to "avoid." But if you want to view and capture story content completely anonymously — without even appearing in the story viewer list — use a third-party viewer like PeekIG.
When you view Instagram stories through PeekIG:
✅ Tip: Instead of screenshotting a story, use PeekIG's download button to save the original image or video file. You'll get the full-resolution original rather than a screenshot of whatever size your screen is.
These apps are scams. Instagram does not provide any API access to screenshot data for profiles, posts, or stories. Any app claiming to tell you "who screenshotted your profile" is either making up data or harvesting your Instagram credentials when you connect it. Do not connect your account to these apps.
No viewer list. No notification. No login required.
